What is Windows on Literacy?
Windows on Literacy is a levelled, nonfiction reading programme that integrates science, maths and social studies content with literacy development. The programme carefully develops basic literacy skills as it introduces children to the world of ideas and knowledge.
Programme Goals
Windows on Literacy offers a rich resource of developmental nonfiction books for beginning through fluent readers. These levelled readers provide children with the supports and challenges that they need to develop and practice key reading skills and strategies.
Nonfiction reading invites young readers to ask and answer questions, to understand that books are sources of information, and to explore personal interests through books.
Focusing on the key concepts in science and social studies, Windows on Literacy taps into children's natural curiosity about themselves, the world around them, and their place in that world.
Objectives
Windows on Literacy was developed to be an integral part of a balanced literacy programme. Children living in the information age need to become fluent readers of information text.
Narrative fictional text is a part of early reading, but a balanced reading programme also includes books that prepare children to deal with the organization patterns and text features found in nonfiction.
As beginning readers acquire new reading skills and strategies, they need opportunities to practice and refine those skills through shared, guided and independent reading. The levelled books in Windows on Literacy provide teachers with the tools to teach children to read nonfiction.
