Set of 24 Alphabet Books, 2 Activity Books and 1 Teacher's Notes.
It is important for children's progress in both reading and writing that they recognise the letters of the alphabet. Children do this in a variety of ways. They can refer to the letter by its name, its letter sound association or by words beginning with the particular letter. The Sunshine Alphabet books have been designed to help children learn the lower case alphabet letters through stories in an enjoyable and natural way.
The Alphabet Books
Excerpt: The C Book
There are 24 books in the series- one for each letter of the alphabet (the letters xyz have been placed together in one book). These books present the alphabet letters in a variety of ways that enable childen to learn letters within a context- a context that helps them to work out letters they are not sure of for themselves.
The Alphabet Books have the following features:
- The focus letter of each book is displayed clearly on the front cover, making it easy for children to find the letter or book they want.
- Each book has a title page containing the focus letter and several words beginning with that letter, illustrated with small pictures. This format encourages children to look for the focus letters and words on subsequent pages and read for themselves. They can also explore the different sounds of the letters- such as the soft g sound in giraffe and the hard g sound in goat- that are presented in the books.
- Each book also includes a story based around the letter. These stories have simple patterns and contain basic vocabulary that is appropriate for children learning to read at the emergent level. The text and illustrations are matched precisely, enabling the children to use the picture clues to assist them in their reading. The focus letter is lightlighted where it occurs at the beginning of a word, so that children can distinguish such words easily.
- The last page of each book contains a rhyme or poem based on the focus letter for the children to read, learn and enjoy.
- The back cover of each book contains the focus letter.
