Word Family books contain simple yet fun rhymes that focus on the "ending sounds". For example, in the title "Mad Sad Glad", the rhyme involves words that ends with "-ad". By repeating these fun rhymes, children will develop phonemic awareness which may result in better reading and spelling skills.
The most commonly found word families are the focus of this series.
Word family words are single syllable words with a beginning and a rhyme, commonly called the "onset" and "rime". In pain, p is the onset, ain is the rime. It is important for reading and spelling to hear the sounds at the beginning of the word and the cluster(s) of sounds that follow. Learning regular spelling patterns can be achieved effectively through awareness of onset and rimes.
